Oh, The Places You’ll Go!
This has got to be one of the most important American books in our literary history. Oh, I know it’s a child’s book, but everything, and I mean everything, Suess says in here is true. I read this to one of my daughters so many times she began to memorize it. It is a tremendous teaching tool, as all Suess’ books are, for learning the English language, but it’s a piece that goes far beyond that. It tells the child what life will be like. You will have bumps in the road, you will be indecisive, you will succeed, you will fail, you will wait, you will be alone. And although he doesn’t always explain why these things happen, he does explain to the child what to expect, and what to do when they’re in a particular situation. In my opinion, this book is one of the best books ever written about how to teach a child what to expect from life. And I beg you to differ with me. <insert sound of gauntlet hitting the ground here>
