Steinbeck

Cannery Row

Jesus Christ, what characters. That’s what I love about this book. It’s my favorite of Steinbeck’s and he is my second favorite novelist after Ernest H. When I first read this, I thought it was great. After living in Atlanta in seedier places than I care to mention, I loved it. I knew Mack and the boys. They were just like the guys I saw every day. The way Steinbeck weaves the multiple post-attempts at a party for Doc into the main thrust of the characters’ roundabout lives is fantastic. A lot of people don’t like this book but, well, I do.
