Music

I cannot describe the love I have for music. I play guitar and bass and fiddle with the piano and writing songs. The first song that I heard, at least the one my mom wrote in my baby book, was Proud Mary by CCR. I would have been around two or three at the time.

My grandfather played the fiddle, and I don’t mean the violin, I mean the fiddle. He taught me when I was eight to play a few chords on a cheap Sears guitar and accompany him. Old songs, Faded Rose, Stone Rag, stuff I’ve never heard since, but what fun it was. He taught me to love music, and of course when I got older, I was listening to everything and trying to play most of it.

I love all music. Jazz and New Age are a bit out there for me, but there’s some I definitely like. Thelonious Monk on the piano for instance. Pure brilliance. I believe Jazz is definitely musicians’ music. In my opinion, it isn’t music for mass consumption, and most of it is hard for me to listen too. But, I’m glad it’s there.

I saw a funny meme on the internet, don’t know if it’s valid or not, but Hugh Laurie, he played Dr. Gregory House on the popular TV show House, was on the Stephen Colbert show. He said that Jazz was America’s greatest gift to the world. Colbert asked him (Laurie’s British) what Britain’s  greatest gift to world was. Laurie was stumped. Colbert simply said, “America.” Hysterical.
