Jaws:
Spielberg is one of the greatest directors of the modern age.
But the story and the characters are what make this film fantastic.
Kudos to Peter Benchley for writing such a great book and making
these characters so rich and the conflict between them so provocative.
Quint, played by Robert Shaw is perfect.
Hooper, played by Richard Dreyfuss is the perfect antagonist for Quint
and their conflict and ultimate respect for one another is absolutely
sublime.
Brody, played by Roy Scheider is the perfect hero. Terrified of everything
having to do with the ocean, but ultimately succeeds.
I’m pretty sure every kid in America that saw this film didn’t go swimming, even in a pool, for at least a year after. I know I didn’t, and some friends have confirmed they didn’t either. I think Spielberg’s best move was to never show the shark. It was hour or so into the film before you saw it. The music was brilliant, kudos to John Williams, who I think won an Oscar for it. Spielberg used the music as the monster until he finally unveiled the actual shark. Just an unbelievable film on so many different levels. Most folks see it as just a horror/suspense gimmicky film, but look deeper and you will see the brilliance.
